Catherine Ashton to meet Iran’s foreign minister

YEREVAN, AUGUST 30, ARMENPRESS. Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says he will meet with EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, in Brussels ahead of a scheduled high-level meeting in New York next month.

Zarif told ISNA news agency on Saturday that he will travel to Italy, Luxemburg and Belgium in the next 10 days, saying he will hold talks with Ashton as the representative of the six world powers engaged in nuclear talks with Iran.

As reports “Armenpress” citing Press TV, earlier this month, Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said Iran and the six powers - the United States, France, Britain, Russia, China and Germany - will meet ahead of the September meeting of UN General Assembly in New York.

Majid Takht-e-Ravanchi, Deputy Foreign Minister for Europe and Americas' Affairs, had said earlier that Iran would hold talks with the six countries before the New York meeting.

Iran and the six countries are to resume talks to reach a final agreement aimed at resolving the standoff over Tehran’s civilian nuclear work.

The two sides signed a historic interim deal in Geneva last November. The agreement entered into force on January 20 and expired six months later on July 20. In July, Tehran and the six states agreed to extend their discussions until November 24 in a bid to work out a final accord.
