From next year domains in Mesrobian alphabet may be registered in Armenia

YEREVAN, JULY 14, ARMENPRESS. From next year domains in Mesrobian (Armenian) alphabet may be registered in Armenia. The Deputy Director of the Internet Society of Armenia Grigori Saghyan told about this during his interview with the reporters.

According to him, at the beginning of 2014, Armenia applied to ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) organization, for the possibility of registering domain names in Mesrobian (Armenian) alphabet. "In accordance with the procedure, the answer is given within one year after applying. On the one hand, the domains in Mesrobian letters can become the cause of isolation of the Armenian sites, but having domain names in the Armenian letters is inevitable, and, to some extent, necessary,” added Saghyan.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a nonprofit organization, which coordinates the Internet's global domain name system. ICANN was created on September 18, 1998, and is responsible for the coordination of maintenance and methodology of several databases of unique identifiers related to the namespaces of the Internet, and ensuring the network's stable and secure operation.
