Protests held in front of Azerbaijani embassies in Argentina and Belgium

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 28, ARMENPRESS. On the night of February 26, the Argentine-Armenian community rallied to the Azeri Embassy of Buenos Aires to mark the 26th anniversary of the pogroms of the Armenian population in Sumgait, Kirovabad, Baku, and Maragha. As reports “Armenpress”, the protest, which involved over 200 people, was organized by the Armenian Youth Federation and was widely covered by the national media, including radio, newspapers and television. With a disproportionate number of policemen, over 300 people attended the rally.

There was another protest two days before, when a group of young Argentine-Armenians tried to deliver a letter to Azeri diplomats, who were conducting a seminar entitled “The resolution of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan and its implications for the region.” After the peaceful protest, the Azeri Foreign Ministry and the government-controlled media tried to distort the purpose of the rally, saying that Armenians “tried to disrupt the event.”

Another demonstration organized by the Armenian National Committee of Belgium was held in front of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Brussels, commemorating the Armenian victims of Azerbaijani pogroms in Sumgait, Baku, Maragha, Kirovabad and other cities.

Waving Armenian and Nagorno Karabakh flags and posters, as well as loud calls in French, English, Russian and Armenian, slogans reminding of Azerbaijan’s bloody past and present, of the pogroms beginning back in 1988 to the assassination of Gourgen Margaryan and the heroic death of Armen Hovhanissyan, the protesters reminded that Armenians all over the world never forget these events and that sooner or later Azerbaijan shall recognize and admit the freedom and independence of Artsakh.
