Francois Hollande reacts on Armenian Genocide recognition in Turkey

YEREVAN, JANUARY 28, ARMENPRESS. The President of France François Hollande who paid a two-day official visit to Turkey at the course of the press conference organized after the meeting with his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gül in Ankara stated that “it is necessary to recognize 1915 events to provide conciliation and consent” while “the law criminalizing the denial of the Armenian Genocide must be applied within the framework of international agreements”. As reports “Armenpress” “Anadolu” News Agency stated it.

“The work activities carried out for the recognition of the history can be painful but it must be done to ensure peace and reconciliation. We enter a period of agenda of history now. It is the 100th anniversary of the First World War this year, and then it is 2015. We must do everything precisely and legally, and do it as everybody is able to understand the theme. A law was adopted in France in that connection, a framework decision was made in 2008. It is necessary to apply them within the framework of international agreements,” François Hollande said.

Reacting upon the issue of Turkey’s membership with the European Union, the President of France said that the ongoing negotiations between Turkey and the EU do not yet mean that they will finish with full membership. François Hollande underscored once again that the issue of Turkey’s membership with the EU is subjected to referendum in France and is dependent on the results of that referendum.
