Last surviving Briton born in 1800s dies

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 15, ARMENPRESS: The last surviving Briton to be born in the 1800s has died. Grace Jones, from Bermondsey, south London, died aged 113 in a nursing home on Thursday morning, her local MP Simon Hughes said. Armenpress reports, quoting The Guardian, that she was born on 7 December 1899 and worked as a seamstress for the government during and after the Second World War until her retirement about half a century ago.
She lived in her own council flat until a few weeks ago when she had a fall and was treated at St Thomas's hospital before moving into a nursing home. Hughes said her intelligence and memory were "undimmed" to the last. "Grace will be dearly missed by her many friends and neighbors and by the wider Bermondsey community," he said.
"We are all very sad today but we pay tribute to Grace for her wonderful, vibrant and long life, for her commitment to her faith, her family and her community, and we know that a woman of such strong Christian faith faced death with no fear."
Jones was engaged during the First World War but her fiancé was killed on active service and she never married. She used to live with her mother, brother and sister but outlasted them all.
