Armenian sugar volumes increased

YEREVAN, AUGUST 6, ARMENPRESS։ During the months of January-June of 2013 the volumes of sugar imported to Armenia have decreased by 47% in comparison with the same period of the previous year. According to the data provided by the National Statistical Service of the Republic of Armenia, in the first half of this year 27,2 thousand tons of sugar was imported to Armenia with the total customs value of $15,5 million.

As reported by Armenpress, in the first half of 2012 $33,4 million was imported to Armenia with the total customs value of 51,5 thousand tons of sugar. The sugar is imported to Armenia mainly from Brazil.

At the same time the volumes of production of sugar in the Republic of Armenia during the months of January-June of 2013 have increased by 18%, making it 22,425 tons. In the first half of 2012 19,000 tons of sugar was produced.

One kilogram of sugar at the shops costs up to 360-370 drams. During the last month the price for one kilogram of sugar has been decreased by 10-20 drams.

At the international market as well the price for sugar has dropped. Last week the price for one ton of sugar at the London LIFFE exchange cost about $475. During the last three years these have been the lowest prices for sugar conditioned mainly by the rich harvest of sugarcane in Brazil. At Brazil’s ports one ton of sugar costs about $350 and at the New York Commodity Exchange – about $360.
