Tigran Sargsyan considers transport fare movement to be social

YEREVAN, JULY 25, ARMENPRESS: The movement, emerged due to the increase of the Yerevan public transport fare, is spontaneous and does not have any party nature. This was stated by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Tigran Sargsyan at the Government session. “Some parties certainly try to take this opportunity but the main reason is the Yerevan Municipality’s decision on the change of the public transport fare. The movement has a social character and is for the social equality, justice and is against poverty, that is, the youth are united by obvious motivations”, - said Tigran Sargsyan, as reported by Armenpress.

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia noted that in Armenia a strong civil society is being formed and that fact is necessary to be taken into account when adopting state decisions. “We cannot ignore the moods, which emerge among the society, and we are obliged to keep the issue in the center of attention”, - said Tigran Sargsyan. “From now on, when making decisions, we all have to hold public discussions, public hearings, debates and I think that the issue of the increase of the public transport fare belongs to this particular field”, - stated the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Tigran Sargsyan at the Government session.

Protest actions are being held in the capital of the Republic. The participants of the demonstrations demand to make the transport fare 100 drams again.

The fare of the public transport means – microbuses and buses – was increased by 50 AMD since July 20, thus making it 150 AMD and 100 AMD for the trolleybuses. The fare for the underground was remained unchanged. As earlier was stated by the Head of the Yerevan Municipality Transport Department Henrik Navasardyan at the press conference held on July 18, the transport tariff is not connected only with the increase of the gas tariff. The increase was caused as well by the rise in price for the cars, spare parts and all kinds of the fuel. The increase of the transport fares is also connected with the raise in price for gas. The increase of the gas tariff in Armenia has been put into force since July 7 2013. The new tariff was approved to be 156 AMD for the users (subscribers), who consume up to 10,000 normal cubic meter of gas monthly, VAT included and 276,98 USD for the subscribers consuming more than 10,000 normal cubic meter of gas monthly, VAT included.
