May 9 celebrated with military parade in Victory Park

YEREVAN, MAY 9, ARMENPRESS: The celebration of the 68th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War and the 21stanniversary of the Liberation of Shoushi was celebrated in the Yerevan Victory Park with a military parade. As reported by Armenpress, the event was attended by the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Hovik Abrahamyan, the Prime Minister of Armenia Tigran Sargsyan, the Minister of Defense Seyran Ohanyan, the representatives of the legislative, executive and military bodies, as well as the veterans of the Great Patriotic War and freedom fighters.

In the talk with the journalists, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Tigran Sargsyan stated that in his family very many memories are connected with his father, who was a participant of the war. “I remember when in 1990s the Supreme Council discussed the issue that maybe the day of May 9 should not be celebrated as it was a holiday of the Soviet Union and not of the independent Republic of Armenia, my father said that it was the day of the victory of the Armenian people as well and that it would be a wrong decision not to celebrate it. Thus, we recovered the May 9, which is one of the most important pages of our history”, - told Tigran Sargsyan.

According to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, we should remember with pride that the Armenian soldiers as well played a considerable role in the Great Patriotic War, as struggling against the fascism they struggled also in the name of the future of the Republic of Armenia.

Concerning the state assistance provided to the veterans, Tigran Sargsyan assured that the Government will try to do everything, so that the veterans feel the attention of the state and the society.

The present laid flowers at the Unknown Soldier Memorial and commemorated the victims of the Great Patriotic War and the War for the Liberation of Shoushi with a minute of silence. A military tent dinner was organized for the veterans, attended as well by the high ranking Armenian officials.
