Appeals court refuses to issue arrest warrant for indicted Sargsyan-era top official

YEREVAN, JANUARY 29, ARMENPRESS. The Court of Appeals upheld the First Instance Court’s decision on refusing to arrest former Secretary of Security Council Armen Gevorgyan, a former deputy PM.

“The court has also rejected the defense’s appellate complaint,” Gevorgyan himself told reporters outside the courtroom.

On December 14, 2018, a Yerevan court denied the prosecution’s request to issue an arrest warrant for Gevorgyan, who is indicted on charges of complicity to overthrow constitutional order, bribery and money laundering. The decision was appealed by the prosecution.

Gevorgyan himself issued a partial appeals for the decision, requesting to affirm absence of reasonable suspicion.

Gevorgyan served as Secretary of the Security Council, Deputy PM and Minister of Territorial Administration and Development for several times in the Sargsyan administration.

He was deputy PM most recently in May, 2018, during Sargsyan’s final days as the country’s leader.
