Single EAEU currency not on agenda – EEC Minister

YEREVAN, JANUARY 16, ARMENPRESS. The issue of creating a common currency in the Eurasian Economic Union is often touched upon, but currently the Union has set no such task, “Armenpress” reports Member of the Board - Minister in charge of Integration and Macroeconomics of the Eurasian Economic Commission Tatyana Valovaya said in a press conference on January 16.

“At this point the EAEU has no need to create a common currency since there are neither reasons nor a necessity for that. Why do we speak about this in such a responsible way? We have examined the European Union’s experience very deeply. Of course, we have applied some rules, provisions, mechanisms, but we also have taken lessons from the mistakes of the European Union”, she said.

According to Valovaya, the case of the European currency shows that the EU reached it in a very easy manner. According to the Board Member, the EU had to do some actions after creating the common currency which it should have done before.

“At this point the EAEU makes efforts to create a common market. This is a rather ambitious goal, which will give great economic profits”, Valovaya stated. Besides, the EEC Minister highlighted the preservation of the financial stability – currently EAEU’s macroeconomic policy is directed at mitigating the negative impacts of currency fluctuations and abrupt changes in the currency markets.
