Voting on constitutional changes interrupted in Turkey’s Parliament by fights between lawmakers
YEREVAN, JANUARY 12, ARMENPRESS. The discussions of the constitutional changes in Turkey’s Parliament were interrupted by physical fights between lawmakers of the ruling Justice and Development Party (JDP) and the Republican People’s Party (CHP), Anadolu reports.
The CHP members, who were against the Constitutional changes, occupied the parliament rostrum. As a result, the opposition and leadership representatives started to beat each other. Some of them were wounded. The main rostrum was even damaged.
The third Article of the Constitutional changes was adopted as a result of a secret voting with 341 votes in favor and 139 against. The Article proposes that lawmakers can be elected at the age of 18, rather than 25.
The fourth Article was adopted by 343 votes in favor and 139 against according to which the parliamentary elections will be held every 5 years instead of 4. The same procedure applies also to the presidential elections. Moreover, both elections will be held the same day.
The Turkish Parliament also adopted the fifth Article that relates to the powers of the Parliament.
Earlier the Parliament adopted the first two Articles of the constitutional changes.
