Archaeologists discover ancient “Vishapakar” (menhir) in Tirinkatar

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 7, ARMENPRESS. An Armenian-German expedition has excavated a bull-like vishapakar (menhir) near the summit (Tirinkatar area) of mount Aragats.

Head of the expedition Arsen Bobokhyan told ARMENPRESS the menhir had fallen on a platform where organic traces linked with plants have been discovered.

“Those traces prove that some kind of rituals took place near the vishapakar”, he said.

Bobokhyan said it is noteworthy that the surroundings of the vishapakar were completely covered with fragments of pottery and obsidian. “These fragments give us the chance to date the area back to third, second millennium B.C.”, he said.

“Since the vishapakar had fallen, we can surely say which direction is what facing. The vishapakar was facing mount Aragats, and those who carried out rituals, were facing Ararat”, he said.

The expedition has been carrying out excavations in Tirinkatar since 2013.
