“They are playing with innocent lives” – A. Bakshyan on Yerevan gunmen

YEREVAN, JULY 21, ARMENPRESS. Member of the “Heritage” Party and member of Yerevan City Council Anahit Bakshyan says the resolution of the situation following gunmen’s ambush on the Police station is in negotiations and dialogue.

“The sides must negotiate, talk and find a path which will be mutually acceptable”, Bakshyan told reporters.

“I followed the events during the night. Thank God, there were some young people who were trying to appease the situation. After having 51 wounded people, the situation appeared to have calmed.

I think the Police don’t have enough skills to calm such incidents”, Bakshyan said.

According to her, each evening the number of protesters is growing in Khorenatsi Street and the situation is gradually becoming more dangerous.

“This intolerance, only drawing black and white, the people who gathered here with no resolving suggestion, in my opinion create an even more dangerous situation. I am sorry for the killed police officer, I extend my condolences to his family, I understand the pain of that family, I have experienced that pain on October 27”, Bakhsyan said, underscoring that the sides must negotiate, talk, and find a path which will be mutually acceptable.

“I would like to speak to the very dear Pavlik, I would tell him – you are taking a sin upon yourself, you yourself won’t live peacefully. Suggest another way, make concessions, both you and them. Don’t let this bloodshed happen, find another way. I appreciate their feelings, but they are playing with lives of innocent people”, she added.

In the morning of July 17 gunmen stormed a Police HQ in Yerevan and took hostages – demanding the release of Zhirayr Sefilyan, who was imprisoned a month ago, charged with illegal possession, transportation and acquisition of firearms and ammunition.

Police Colonel Artur Vanoyan has been killed by the gunmen during the ambush.

Colonel Aram Hovhannisyan, Lt. – Colonel Hrach Khosteghyan, Corporal Gagik Mkrtchyan received gunshot wounds. 7 people are being held hostage. There are no wounded among the gunmen.

In the evening of July 20, protesters have clashed with police forces in Khorenatsi Street.

The protesters have thrown rocks and different objects at police officers.

As of 02:30 July 21, 28 police officers and 23 civilians suffered injuries.
