“AGBU-Europe” welcomes Bundestag resolution recognizing Armenian Genocide

YEREVAN, JUNE 3, ARMENPRESS. “The Armenian General Benevolent Union-Europe” welcomed the adoption of the resolution by the Bundestag dedicated to the “memory and commemoration of the genocide of Armenians and other Christian minorities”, reports "Armenpress".

In the text of the resolution, the German Parliament also expresses its complaint against the acts of the Young Turks government of the time, which led to the almost total annihilation of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire.

“The recognition by the German Parliament has a significant importance”, president of the ACBU-Europe Nadia Gortzounian said. “Germany has questioned its own history as several other countries have done. Its society and institutions understand the lasting impact of past crimes if they are not revealed and remembered”.

“In addition to commemorating the Armenian Genocide, the Bundestag resolution also condemns Germany’s own involvement in these events, as Turkey’s main ally during the World War I.

“We must express our gratitude in particular to one of the Bundestag MPs, Cem Özdemir”, says Sahak Artazyan, President of AGBU’s affiliate in Germany. “Cem fulfilled the promise he made on April 24, 2015. He plays enormous role for all of us in Europe”.

A number of Parliaments around the world have recognized the Armenian Genocide, including the European Parliament. AGBU-Europe actively works with civil society in Turkey and with political leaders around Europe to address the consequences of the genocide, which include continued victimization of minorities in Turkey and pressures towards the neighboring Armenia.

AGBU-Europe coordinates and develops the pan-European activities of the Armenian General Benevolent Union. Established in 1906, AGBU is the world’s largest non-profit Armenian organization. AGBU Europe runs numerous programs in fields relating to academic research, the preservation and promotion of heritage, education and culture as well as awareness raising, advocacy and leadership training.
