4 dead in midair collision of small planes

YEREVAN, AUGUST 17, ARMENPRESS. Two small planes approaching a municipal airport southeast of San Diego collided in midair Sunday, authorities said, killing four people and sparking grass fires in the area.

Armenpress reports, referring to “USA TODAY”, that the crash, about two miles northeast of Brown Field, was reported around 11 a.m., Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor told “USA TODAY”. A twin-engine Sabreliner jet and a single-engine Cessna 172 collided as they approached the airport. Emergency crews found wreckage from the two planes about 100 yards apart in a remote area of Otay Mesa, sheriff's Lt. Jim Bolwerk told The San Diego Union-Tribune. California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection San Diego spokesman Nick Schuler told “USA TODAY” that four people were confirmed dead; he said authorities were still trying to determine whether there were more people on board the two planes. One firefighter was transported to a hospital with heat-related injuries while fighting one of the fires in near-100 degree temperatures, he said.
