European Parliament adopts Armenian Genocide Resolution

European Parliament adopts Armenian Genocide Resolution

YEREVAN, 15 APRIL, ARMENPRESS. Just minutes ago, the European Parliament adopted the Resolution on the Armenian Genocide, which proposes to and assigns the national parliaments and governments of EU member states to adopt relevant resolutions and decisions on recognizing and condemning the phenomenon. As “Armenpress” reports, this is the third Resolution adopted by the European Parliament that recognizes the genocide that was planned and perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire and took the lives of 1.5 million Armenians in 1915.

The European Parliament adopted a decision recognizing the Armenian Genocide on September 28, 2005. On June 18, 1987, the Resolution of the European Parliament particularly stated that the European Parliament believes that the tragic events in 1915-1917 involving the Armenians living in the territory of the Ottoman Empire constitute genocide within the meaning of the convention on the prevention and the punishment of the crime of genocide adopted by the UN General Assembly on 9 December 1948. With this new Resolution, the European Parliament is urging the Council of Europe to make sure the government of modern-day Turkey recognizes the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1917 and establish dialogue between Turkey and the Armenians.
