EP Deputies urge Turkey to recognize the Armenian Genocide

YEREVAN, 15 APRIL, ARMENPRESS. During the discussion on the draft of the Armenian Genocide Resolution that began in the European Parliament, the Deputies of the European Parliament urged Turkey to recognize the Armenian Genocide. “We are here to urge the Turkish government to recognize the Armenian Genocide. This is difficult, just as it was difficult for the Germans to recognize what happened to the Jews during WWII. It’s important for nations to acknowledge what their ancestors did. I find that Mr. Erdoğan will agree with this. This is an official matter and a matter of collective memory,” Romanian Deputy of the European Parliament Cristian Dan Preda said, adding that the Armenian Genocide has to be a matter of discussion for leaders of nations, not scholars, as “Armenpress” reports.

Latvian Deputy Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica recalled that the recent Resolution of the European Parliament called on all EU member states to acknowledge the Armenian massacres perpetrated in the Ottoman Empire as genocide and emphasized that the tragic events of 1915 have a great impact on Armenian-Turkish relations.

Vice-President of the European Parliament Urlike Lunacek stressed the importance of the adoption of this Resolution. In an interview to the Turkish Dogan news agency, Vice-President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani touched upon the April 15 discussion and mentioned that“nobody will benefit from the denial of the Armenian Genocide”.
