Georgian President pays tribute to Armenian Genocide victims memory

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 27, ARMENPRESS. The delegation led by the President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili visited Tzitzernakaberd memorial dedicated to the memory of the Armenian Genocide victims on February 27. As reports “Armenpress”, the Georgian President placed a wreath at the Armenian Genocide victims’ memorial and flowers by the unquenchable fire and honored the memory of the innocent victims with a minute of silence. 

The members of the Georgian delegation visited the Memory Park, where Giorgi Margvelashvili planted a fir. The President of Georgia was accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia Edward Nalbandian, the Deputy Mayor of Yerevan Kamo Areyan, the Ambassador of Georgia to the Republic of Armenia Tengiz Sharmanashvili, the Ambassador of Armenia to Georgia Hovhannes Manukyan and others.

On February 27, on the invitation of President Serzh Sargsyan, the President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili arrived in the Republic of Armenia on a two-day official visit.

In the framework of his visit Giorgi Margvelashvili is to meet with Armenia's high-ranking leadership and the Catholicos of All Armenians, His Holiness Karekin II.

The Presidents of Armenia and Georgia will hold a private meeting, followed by the extended negotiations with the participation of the two countries' delegation members. After the negotiations, in the presence of the representatives of the mass media, Serzh Sargsyan and Giorgi Margvelashvili will make a statement on the results of the negotiations.

The fact of the Armenian Genocide by the Ottoman government has been documented, recognized, and affirmed in the form of media and eyewitness reports, laws, resolutions, and statements by many states and international organizations. The complete catalogue of all documents categorizing the 1915 wholesale massacre of the Armenian population in Ottoman Empire as a premeditated and thoroughly executed act of genocide, is extensive. Uruguay was the first country to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide in 1965. The massacres of the Armenian people were officially condemned and recognized as a genocide in accordance with the international law by France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Greece, Slovakia, Cyprus, Lebanon, Uruguay, Argentina, Venezuela, Chile, Canada, Vatican, and Australia.
