US confirms it prepared draft UN Security Council resolution on nuclear weapons in space

YEREVAN, MARCH 18, ARMENPRESS. US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield confirmed that Washington and Tokyo prepared a draft UN Security Council resolution that reaffirms the ban on deployment of nuclear weapons in space.

"Any placement of nuclear weapons into orbit around the Earth would be unprecedented, dangerous and unacceptable. State parties must commit to upholding their obligations under Article Four of the Outer Space Treaty [which prohibits deployment of any weapons of mass destruction in space, including nuclear ones]. And we must urge all member states who are not yet party to it to see to it without delay," Tass quoted her as saying.

"And today, I can announce that, together with Japan, the United States puts forward a Security Council resolution reaffirming the fundamental obligations that parties have under this treaty and further calling on member states to not develop any nuclear weapons or any other kinds of weapons of mass destruction that are specifically designed to be placed in orbit around Earth," the envoy announced, Tass reports.

Previously, Bloomberg reported that, due to the spreading media reports that Russia develops anti-satellite weapons, the US prepares a draft UN Security Council resolution against deployment of nuclear weapons in space.
