ICRC visits arrested Armenians in Azerbaijan

ICRC visits arrested Armenians in Azerbaijan

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 14, ARMENPRESS. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) visited in early November  Armenians detained by Azerbaijani authorities, ICRC Armenia communications manager Zara Amatuni told Armenpress.

“We continue to visit all the Armenians who’ve been arrested in Azerbaijan and whose names have been confirmed by the Azerbaijani authorities. I am talking about the people who have been arrested and are in Azerbaijan since 2020, and as a result of the escalations of 2021 and September 19 of 2023. The visits take place regularly. We give them the opportunity to maintain contact with their families,” Amatuni said.

The ICRC visited some of the detainees in Baku in October, and in the beginning of November it visited for the first time the Armenians who were arrested after the September 19 Azerbaijani attack in Nagorno-Karabakh. The ICRC received confirmations about their arrest only recently.

The visits take place in the form of private meetings with the detainees. The ICRC focuses on the health and detention conditions of the detainees. The conditions are observed through both private meetings and visits to all possible areas.

“The purpose of the visits is for us to be able to see what conditions they are in, what they need, and to properly address these needs if we are able to support. We do not raise this in the public dimension. This allows us to maximally openly discuss these issues with the relevant authorities who are responsible for these persons,” Amatuni said.
