Authorities to investigate all possible versions in barracks fire

YEREVAN, JANUARY 26, ARMENPRESS. All versions discussed by the public on what could have caused the deadly fire in the military barracks will be investigated and checked, according to Prosecutor-General Anna Vardapetyan.

At this moment the investigation indicates that the fire was caused as a result of the officer’s negligent attempt to light the stove with gasoline.

Vardapetyan said at the Cabinet meeting that one person is arrested and charged in the investigation.

“Pursuant to the interests of the investigation, allow me not to reveal the sequence of persons who are going to be investigated,” Vardapetyan told Prime Minister Pashinyan when asked to brief on the proceedings. She said that the military prosecutor is supervising the process on a daily basis. Vardapetyan said she is periodically briefing the prime minister on the investigation.

Furthermore, on January 23, the military general-prosecutor ordered military prosecutors of all garrisons to provide information on the conditions in all barracks as soon as possible.

The prosecutors will gather information on fire safety conditions and flammable substances, as well as all other safety conditions, such as whether or not the barracks are equipped with fire exits.

“All versions will be checked, so that as a result of the probe we don’t have any black holes, rumors and expert opinions of the level of gossips,” Vardapetyan said.

The version of the incident which the prime minister revealed at the previous Cabinet meeting is now the “viable” version, Vardapetyan said. She said the negligent use of gasoline which resulted in the fire is the main version at this moment, and they have the evidence indicating it. All eyewitnesses who’ve been questioned so far also substantiate this version, Investigative Committee President Argishti Kyaramyan in turn added.

In turn , PM Pashinyan revealed further details from the incident.

“So factually the information of the criminal case substantiates that the fire in the stove had burnt out, the soldier put wood into it, and then the officer said ‘light it with something’, and the soldier said ‘there’s ash inside, nothing else needs to be done’. The officer tried to burn it, then started looking for diesel fuel, asked for it from the drivers, and then, for some reason, decided that gasoline would be better. The eyewitness saw that gasoline canister burning and the officer’s clothes burning, and also the area burning, this is substantiated at this moment,” Pashinyan said.
