CSTO Secretary General hopes amended version on Armenia assistance will be adopted

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 19, ARMENPRESS. The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Secretary General Stanislav Zas says that the CSTO acted swiftly and effectively and adopted several important decisions over the September 13 fighting on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border when Azerbaijan attacked Armenia.

Speaking at a press conference, he said that for the first time in the history of the organization the CSTO convened 5 sessions of the Collective Security Council in one year.

“Three times the session was convened by the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border was discussed during the emergency sessions of the CSTO Collective Security Council. Upon the instruction of the leaders a monitoring mission was developed led by the Secretary General and the Chief of the Joint Staff. I would like to emphasize the swift work that was recorded during the events in September,” Zas said.

He said that on September 13, during fierce fighting on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, the CSTO leaders met online to hold a summit and discuss the situation.

“It was immediately decided to send a monitoring mission to Armenia. Literally a day later the aircraft carrying the first group of the monitoring mission landed in Yerevan. And further studies show that we can work wherever it is required to act swiftly and effectively. As a result of that mission’s work, several decisions of the Collective Security Council regarding the modern measures of providing help to Armenia were developed and discussed during the November 23 [summit] in Yerevan. I’d like to expect that after respective amendments we will reach the package adoption of two highly important complementing documents – I am speaking about providing help to Armenia and the statement of the CSTO foreign ministerial council in support of the efforts for establishing peace in the South Caucasus region,” Zas said.
