Russia ready to support preparation of peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan – foreign
ministry

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 10, ARMENPRESS. Russia is ready to support the preparation of a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Head of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Fourth CIS Department Denis Gonchar told TASS.

“We are ready to further support by all means the delimitation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and the preparation of the peace treaty between Baku and Yerevan, including through organizing high-level trilateral meetings on the territory of Russia. These two extremely sensitive issues for both sides require searching for mutually-acceptable and long-term solutions,” he said.

The Russian diplomat added that disclosing details from the negotiations or discussing the positions of the sides in the press aren’t always useful.

“We are also preparing the meetings between the societies and expert communities of the two countries. This important direction of the joint efforts is aimed at contributing to developing an atmosphere of trust in the relations of Armenia and Azerbaijan,” Gonchar said.

Trilateral inter-parliamentary dialogue, which was endorsed in the Sochi summit, could also have contribution in this process, he added.

Gonchar highlighted that during the October 31 meeting in Sochi the leaders of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan reaffirmed commitment to strictly observe the 9 November 2020, 11 January and 26 November 2021 trilateral agreements, which together with the Sochi summit statement form the roadmap for the complex normalization of the Armenian-Azerbaijani relations.

“I’d like to once again emphasize the key role of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in its area of deployment in ensuring security. This was specially noted by the leaders of the three countries in the Sochi summit and they stressed the demand of efforts from our peacekeepers aimed at stabilizing the situation in the region,” Gonchar added.

Speaking about transport and economic unblocking, Gonchar mentioned that Moscow hosted the 11th meeting of the trilateral working group on December 6.

“The construction of the railway, development of rail connection and organization of transportation between the three countries and in the region was substantially discussed. The Armenian and Azerbaijani sides noted Russia’s positive role in the efforts for unblocking transport connections,” Gonchar said.
