Azerbaijan is the aggressor and should withdraw its troops from the territory of Armenia – MEPs

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 24, ARMENPRESS. The Members of the European Parliament at the meeting with the Armenian MPs in Strasbourg unequivocally stated that Azerbaijan is the aggressor and should immediately withdraw its troops from the sovereign territory of Armenia, MP Hayk Konjoryan from the "Civil Contract" faction of the National Assembly of Armenia presented the details of the meetings held in Strasbourg in an interview with ARMENPRESS.

Head of the "Civil Contractt" faction Hayk Konjoryan, MPs Arman Yeghoyan and Arusyak Julhakyan had about 2 dozen meetings in Strasbourg recently. During the political consultations, they presented to the MEPs the situation created around Armenia, the fact that Azerbaijan actually attacked the sovereign territory of Armenia, occupied some territories, and that, in essence, it is trying to implement an aggressive policy towards Armenia with gross violations of international law.

"They made unequivocal statements that Azerbaijan is the aggressor, that Azerbaijan should immediately withdraw its troops from the sovereign territory of Armenia. Many of them also condemned, have condemned and I am sure will still condemn this aggressive behavior by Azerbaijan in their addressed statements. I attach great importance to this visit and meetings, because we tried to present the Armenian point of view, the Armenian interest, our positions, that we are committed to the peace agenda, but at the same time we will not allow encroachments on our sovereign territory," said Konjoryan.

Konjoryan noted that there is a clear perception among the Members of the European Parliament that Azerbaijan is the aggressor, many of them actively condemn and make statements, as well as initiate various debates, processes of adopting resolutions or documents. In Strasbourg, the Armenian MPs also met Andrey Kovatchev, the rapporteur on Armenia in the European Parliament, who also gave unequivocal assessments of Azerbaijan's aggression. Kovatchev also arrived in Armenia a day after the meeting with the MPs. He announced also in Armenia that the attack was from Azerbaijan. In the coming days, the Italian MEP Massimo Castaldo will also visit Armenia, who also met with the Armenian MPs in Strasbourg. Castaldo will come to Armenia to familiarize himself with the situation on the spot.

"Mainly, the result of our meetings and such meetings should be the generation of political pressure on Azerbaijan, so that as a result of this international pressure and international isolation, Azerbaijan refrains from aggressive actions against Armenia. In this sense, these meetings will have their specific logic and logical continuity”, Konjoryan said.

The MPs noted that since the footage of the shooting of Armenian prisoners of war by the Azerbaijani armed forces was published on the Internet, the positions of the European partners regarding the Azerbaijani actions have actually become tougher.

The Members of the European Parliament are shocked by this inhuman cruelty. Konjoryan is sure that the MEPs who met with them will also convey the theses voiced by the Armenian side to their national governments. "Constant work is being done both through embassies, the Foreign Ministry, and parliamentary diplomacy," said Konjoryan.

In the near future, the reports on both Armenia and Azerbaijan will be discussed in the European Parliament. Konjoryan is sure that the theses presented at the meetings will play an important role.
