YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 18, ARMENPRESS. The US Congress strongly condemns the illegal and deadly attacks by Azerbaijan against Armenia, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said during a joint press conference with Speaker of Parliament of Armenia Alen Simonyan in Yerevan.

In her remarks Nancy Pelosi firstly thanked the Armenian Speaker of Parliament for hosting the US Congressional delegation and for the commitment to strengthen the cooperation between the two countries and the two parliaments.

“It was my honor to host the Speaker in the United States capital earlier this year, during which we discussed issues relating to strengthening democracy and security in Armenia. Now it’s a great honor to be the first Speaker of the House, a highest-ranking American ever, to visit Armenia where we are continuing our dialogue. We just had a very productive meeting during which we reaffirmed our commitment, the commitment of the United States Congress to advancing security, economic development and democratic institutions in Armenia and in the region. We discussed with pride that Congress took in leading way to secure the US formal recognition of the Armenian Genocide, which we did in legislation in 2019 which President Biden made official last year. “We are grateful to President Biden for that and for inviting the Prime Minister to participate in the Democracy Summit”, she said.

The US House Speaker said that their meetings always have a particular focus on security. “Our meeting again had a particular importance to us because the focus was on security following the illegal and deadly attacks by Azerbaijan on the Armenian territory. 

We strongly condemn those attacks, we in our delegation on behalf of Congress, which threatens prospects for much needed peace agreement.

The United States as an OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair has clearly and has long stated that there can be no military solution to the conflict. We continue to watch the situation closely and we continue supporting a negotiated, comprehensive and sustainable solution to all issues relating to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict”, the US House Speaker said.
