UN Security Council rejects Russian draft resolution on Venezuela

YEREVAN, MARCH 1, ARMENPRESS. The UN Security Council rejected the draft resolution put forward by Russia concerning the settlement of the Venezuelan crisis during a voting, TASS reported.

The Russian resolution was supported by four countries (Russia, China, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa), Seven nations, such as the United States and several European nations, voted against. Four UN Security Council members, including Indonesia and Kuwait, abstained.

The resolution, authored by Moscow, contains a call to peaceful settlement of the crisis on the basis of dialogue, including the mechanism created by a group of nations in Montevideo.

Earlier another resolution on Venezuela put forward by the US has also been rejected. The draft resolution called for "the start of a peaceful political process leading to free, fair, and credible presidential elections," and stresses "the need to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Venezuela and to facilitate unhindered access and delivery of assistance to all in need in the entirety of the territory of Venezuela in accordance with humanitarian principles."
