Nine people, including customs officers, indicted amid Azerbaijani apple smuggling probe

YEREVAN, MAY 30, ARMENPRESS. Nine people have been indicted in the investigation of Azerbaijani apple smuggling to Armenia.

Three customs officers of the state revenue committee have been charged with bribery, Mushegh Babayan, deputy chief of the special investigative service told ARMENPRESS.

“Another customs officer has been charged for bribery. Two of the officials have been remanded in custody. Three citizens have been charged for tax evasion and illegal business operations, while two other citizens are charged for being an accessory”, he said.

The investigation revealed that several businessmen have smuggled fruits and vegetables and bribed customs officials for customs clearing.

5 citizens and 4 customs officials are charged.

The smuggled products included apples of Azeri origin, and the total damages to the state is estimated more than 8 million drams.
