Political expert: Turkey must take first step in regulation of Armenian-Turkish relations

YEREVAN, AUGUST 31, ARMENPRESS. The protocols signed between Armenia and Turkey 8 years ago are not timely and cannot serve as a fundamental document for the establishment of the relations between the two countries. Turkey has changed so much as a state during these 8 years that today neither protocol, nor other serious documents are required to establish relations with Armenia.

The viewpoint belongs to the Chairman of the Board of the Analytical Centre on Globalization and Regional Cooperation Stepan Grigoryan.

According to the political expert Turkey must take the first step by opening its borders with Armenia and making a corresponding statement on establishing diplomatic relations as Turkey had refused to ratify those protocols earlier.

“If no procedure is resumed with Turkey today, then there can be no return to the protocols, because Turkey refused their ratification, Turkey put forward preconditions; and it must change its policy and if it wants open the border and send an official letter for the establishment of diplomatic relations.”, said Grigoryan, adding that he has always been positive about the Armenian-Turkish protocols but today he thinks that the protocols should not be referred to.

In reply to the question of “Armenpress”, the political expert emphasizes that because of the Ukrainian crises and the ISES, the Armenian-Turkish relations do not bear the same significance as they did 8 years ago within the scope of the international community, but it does not mean that once regulation processes are started, the international community will not assist.
