Armenia's Seismic Protection Service dismisses reports on strong earthquake in Vanadzor

YEREVAN, JULY 7, ARMENPRESS. The Head of the Seismic Protection Service of the Republic of Armenia Hrachya Petrosyan urges not to intensify the situation, adding that the reports on the new earthquake in Vanadzor do not correspond to the reality. Among other things, the Head of the Seismic Protection Service of the Republic of Armenia Hrachya Petrosyan underscored: “News on a new earthquake are not accurate. People are just interested in spreading them. There are no anomalies recorded by the Service’s network, which could serve as basis for the prediction of major earthquakes, therefore there is no need to panic.”

On July 7, 13 km south-west from the city of Vanadzor, at 03:08 p.m. local time, a 4-magnitude earthquake occurred, the strength of which reached 5 points at the epicenter. The geographic coordinates of the epicenter are: northern latitude 40,710 and eastern longitude 44.410. The hypocenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 10 km. As “Armenpress” was informed from the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Armenia, the earthquake was felt in the regions of Lori and Aragatsotn with 3-4 magnitude. The earthquake was followed by 4 aftershocks with 0.8-1.2 magnitude.
