Bundestag MP urges Turkey to face its past

YEREVAN, MAY 30, ARMENPRESS. Bundestag CDU/CSU MP, President of the Germany-Armenia alliance Albert Weiler has big expectations in Turkey having the courage to face its past regarding the Armenian Genocide.

The MPs office informed ARMENPRESS on Weiler’s position and expectations regarding the June 2 discussions of the Armenian Genocide bill in the Bundestag.

“June 2 is a crucial date for recognition of genocides committed against the Armenian people and other Christian minorities in the Ottoman Empire. The fact that the Greens and the coalition parties have come to an agreement over the interparty bill is especially welcomed. Both during my speeches in the Parliament, as well as in Armenia, I have numerously announced that Germany, as an ally of the Ottoman Empire, must have a special commitment in the recognition and condemnation issue of the Armenian Genocide. Even after 101 years we have to show out sympathy to millions of descendants of the Christian Armenians throughout the world”, Weiler said.

He expressed with regret that Turkey hasn’t recognized the historic reality until now.

“Unfortunately, Turkey doesn’t display courage in the recognition of its own past. Commitment and facing the past could be the best path to reconciliation. With this bill, we want to prepare that path and encourage Turkey’s courageous democratic figures to seek the reconciliation and fair working path with Armenia, in order for the two countries to be closer to one another in the future”, he said.
