"Happy Birthday to You": Yerevan sang, spoke and inhaled with Aznavour

YEREVAN, MAY 22, ARMENPRESS. Armenian artists performed songs of prominent singer, Armenian national hero Charles Aznavour on the occasion of his 92th anniversary at the square called after his name in Yerevan. The concert was opened by the musician Levon Malkhasyan, many other singers such as Sona Shiroyan, “Art Cinema” ensemble, Tigran Hamasyan, Hayk Petrosyan performed Aznavour’s famous songs.

The organizer of the concert, the director of the “TM Production” company Thomas Martirosyan says with the launch of the concert they want to make this an annual tradition and expand the number of performers up to foreign singers. The organizer informed that he personally told Aznavour about the concert during his last visit to Armenia. Hearing about this Charles simply smiled.

Singer and actor Hayk Petrposyan’s relation with Aznavour started when Hayk was 5 years old. “During cold and dark years my mother, when we had electricity for an hour, was listening to Aznavour and crying. Initially I hated Aznavour since I thought my mother was crying due to this man. Then I grew up, went to France, learned the language, and loved his songs very much. I love him as a man who is a great example of persistence and commitment. I once had a chance to shake his hand when he came to Paris to take part in my father’s performance”, Hayk Petrosyan, the son of famous actor Vardan Petrosyan said.

During his performance Hayk Petrosyan offered the audience to sing “Happy Birthday” song having a hope that later Charles Aznavour will see the concert video.

Shahnur (Charles) Aznavourian was born on May 22, 1924 in the family of Armenian migrants Misha and Qnar Aznavorians. Later Charles Aznavour became French-Armenian prominent singer, composer, writer, actor and public figure.

His sister Aida Aznavour in the “Apariks” book presenting the history of her brother and her family, described the moment when her father and grandfather knew about her mother’s pregnancy.

“The autumn of 1923 was really unusual, my mother was pregnant. Upon learning about this Misha and father closed the restaurant, and decided to celebrate this with “Caucasus” wine, Vodka rivers, inevitable tears of joy…After drinking the third glass they decided that the baby will be a boy, after the seventh glass they said he will become burly, beautiful and handsome man, after the eleventh they said he will spread Aznavour’s patronymic throughout the world…” a part from “Apariks” book.
