Economist forecasts Russian-Turkish tense relations will have negative impact on economies

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 12, ARMENPRESS. Russian “Gazprom” will lose 20% of its income, Turkey’s GDP will decrease by 3% due to the deterioration of Russian-Turkish relations.  “Armenpress” reports that economist Ashot Yeghiazaryan made such a remark on December 12 during the meeting with journalists.

“Russia, naturally, will lose the opportunity of cheap import of some products, its investment projects in Turkey, and most important of all, 20% of gas export. Russia annually exports 27 billion cubic metres of gas to Turkey. That loss will decrease “Gazprom” income with 20%  which had already been decreased by global drop of prices in energy resources,” the economist said, adding that there are opinions in Turkey that the country could have a loss of  20 billion USD decreasing Turkey’s GDP by over 3%.

Yeghiazaryan stated that both countries could have losses in the created situation. Turkey will lose the opportunity to export consumer products to the Russian market, as well as tourists from Russia who comprised 12% of the overall number of the tourists visiting Turkey.

Relations between Moscow and Ankara deteriorated as the Russian Su-24 warplane was shot down over Syria by an air-to-air surface fired from a Turkish F-16 plane when the bomber was at an altitude of 6,000 meters at a distance of 1 km from the Turkish bomber. According to the Russian President Putin, the Su-24 plane crash in Syria went beyond normal struggle against terrorism, and it was "a stab in Russia’s back delivered by terrorist accomplices." Vladimir Putin also said:"We will certainly carefully analyze what has happened and today’s tragic event will have serious consequences to Russian-Turkish relations."
