Khadija Ismayilova sentenced to imprisonment of 7,5 years

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 1, ARMENPRESS. Famous journalist, Azerbaijani service “Radio Liberty” Khadija Ismayilova’s verdict was announced at Baku Court on Grave Crimes. “Armenpress” reports, referring to Azerbaijan APA agency that Khadija Ismayilova was sentenced to imprisonment of 7 years and 6 months being deprived of the right to occupy senior positions for 3 years.

The Court found Khadija Ismayilova not guilty by article 125 (inciting to commit suicide) noting that there was not enough evidence on that.

Journalist of Azerbaijani service “Radio Liberty” Khadija Ismayilova was first accused of inciting to commit suicide, then embezzlement, tax evasion, and abuse of power.

Khadija Ismayilova was arrested on October, last year in Azerbaijan with the accusal of inciting former colleague to committing suicide.

Ismayilova is the author of investigative journalism on corruption in the upper echelons of Azerbaijan authorities, as a result of which Ilham Aliyev’s and his family’s offshore zone property of hundred million dollars was revealed. In recent years she also hosted a talk show at the Azerbaijani service “Radio Liberty”.

On April 16 Azerbaijani Meydan TV channel announced that she was chosen to be the recipient of the annual PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award to be handed to her in New York in May of 2015.
