Strong earthquake hits off Japan coast

YEREVAN, MAY 30, ARMENPRESS. strong earthquake Saturday evening centered on a southern chain of Japanese islands shook buildings in the Tokyo area but appeared to cause little damage.

As reports “Armenpress’ citing WSJ, the magnitude 8.5 quake in the Ogasawara Island chain located hundreds of kilometers south of Tokyo didn't generate a tsunami or an earthquake-generated tidal wave.

Japanese national broadcast NHK showed footage of buildings in central Tokyo shaking dramatically, although it noted no initial reports of any damage or injuries from the quake.

On Monday, Tokyo was rocked by a 5.5 magnitude quake that caused temporary suspension of the area’s train system and the runways at one of the capital’s airports.

The quake was centered on the northern part of Saitama prefecture, northwest of Tokyo, and 56 kilometers (35 miles) below ground.
