Right of peoples to self-determination was and remains key to Karabakh conflict regulation

YEREVAN, AUGUST 11, ARMENPRESS. The statements by the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, and then by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov made at the meeting of the Presidents of Armenia, Russia, and Azerbaijan in Sochi, prove that Russia and the other Misnk Group Co-Chairs clearly understand that the right of peoples to self-determination is the key to the peaceful regulation of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. Candidate of Historical Sciences Aram Ananyan stated this in a conversation with “Armenpress”.

Among other things, Aram Ananyan underscored: “Vladimir Putin noted that the conflict was formed long ago and it’s a heritage of the Soviet Union, adding that patience, wisdom, and mutual respect are necessary to find the solution. The Russian President gave the precise diagnosis of the issue. The Bolsheviks made a mistake giving Artsakh to Azerbaijan in 1921 and created the problem, then, the USSR tried to take no notice of it and in the end failed to find a solution, as any form of declaration of will was excluded. Putin touched upon the value basis of the regulation and certified that the Co-Chairs are not going to repeat the mistakes of the past, but want to correct them and respect the right of peoples to self-determination.”

Armenia declared, that the conflict must be resolved based on the mutual compromises and the principles offered by the co-chairs of the Minsk group of OSCE. The right of peoples to self-determination is clearly formulated there. ”Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, in fact, repeated Armenia’s position. He said, that the presidents reaffirmed their commitment to the principles set out by the co-chairs at the highest level, at the level of presidents, and these principles are the need to find a solution on the basis of peaceful approach, respecting the territorial integrity and respecting the right of peoples to self-determination”,- Ananyan quoted. He thinks, that official Baku has sooner or later to understand, that it is impossible to resolve the conflict without implementing the abovementioned universal international norm. The Presidents of the Republic of Armenia, Russian Federation and Azerbaijan met in Sochi for trilateral talks 10 August 2013. This is the first meeting of the Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents since the meeting in Vienna, on November 19, 2013.
