1240 elderly people living in Armenia's eight nursing homes: parent-loving society or retreat 
of traditions?

YEREVAN, JUNE 17, ARMENPRESS. Today, the elderly people, living in families or alone, make use of the support of several projects, which are carried out by both the state and private sectors. According to the statistics, 60 percent of the elderly people live in the cities, and 40 percent – in the villages. In Armenia, the number of people over the age of 65 years is 380 thousand, the number of the single elderly people involved in the system of vulnerable families – 12 thousand, 8 thousand of whom are beneficiaries of this or that program. “Armenpress” was informed about this from the Head of the Department of the Issues of Elderly People and Disabled at the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs Anahit Gevorgyan.

According to the official, there are four nursing homes under the Ministry, the planned number of the elderly people is 1090, but there are vacant places. In general, there are eight nursing homes in the republic, and the number of people living there is 1240. Besides, there are daycare centers, and also 24-hour care services are provided to the elderly people living alone.
