World and Olympic champions hard to play in European tournament: Armenian chess player

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 28, ARMENPRESS: The chess world prepares for the three forthcoming big events – the European and world team championship and the Anand-Carlsen match for the world champion title. The Armenian men’s team is preparing for the upcoming tournaments. The eldest member of the Armenian men’s team Vladimir Hakobyan assures in his interview to Armenpress that though it will be hard but our team always struggle for the best.
- Mr. Hakobyan, there is a question, which concerns and interests many. What is the reason that since 1999 our men’s team has not become the European champion?
- For the world and Olympic champions it is hard to play in the European championship. Certainly, that tournament is not that easy but it yields to the world championship and the Olympiad. In any case we will try to celebrate that victory as well.
- As the member of the team, what do you think will our team keep the title of the champion?
- It is hard to say. It is always very difficult to be the best in that kind of big tournament. To be objective, our team is never on the first place by its rating. Russia or some other team is always on the first horizontal. Though I guess that to be in the top three is a satisfactory result. And we should work always to be in the top three. Certainly, the first horizontal is always preferred but there are so many details and that depends on which shape are the players of the team in. Everything depends on us. In any case, we will try to do our best in the world tournament. (THE FULL VERSION OF THE INTERVIEW IS AVAILABLE IN ARMENIAN)
