Stability is the most important issue of Caucasian Region: James Der Derian


YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 17, ARMENPRESS: At the moment the most important issue for the Caucasian region is stability and its legislative provision, Watson Institute research professor of international studies and professor of political science at Brown University James Der Derian said in a briefing with journalists on November 17. He is in Yerevan to participate in a scientific conference on the theme of "The Dynamics of Regional Security in South Caucasus". Der Derian said that his country – the USA, is taking serious steps in the direction of solution of this issue.

The opening of the borders and enlargement of civil society, as well as Hillary Clinton's visit to the region are among the best manifestations of the US efforts. According to the professor, the human rights, as well as the priority of every state should be respected and defended.

"I think in security of any region it is important what interests are shared there. Up to now those profits and interest have depended on natural resources. People – the Armenians, are the greatest merit of Armenia. Human capital is a resource of utmost importance," Der Derian said. Referring to Karabakh issue, the professor said that this is his first visit to Armenia: it is several days he is here, but has a great wish to return to study the issue better. In all cases, he is sure, the diplomatic solutions are the best.

Experts of security sphere from the USA, Turkey, Israel, Canada, Armenia, Great Britain, Romania and Russia participate in "The dynamics of Regional Security in South Caucasus" two-day scientific conference.

RA Defense Minister's Advisor Hayk Qotanjyan read RA President's welcoming speech addressed to the participants of the scientific conference. In his message the President referred to the regional challenges, complex of threats, which make Armenia be ready for the possible war activities.

The agenda of the discussions of the conference include themes concerning not only Caucasus, but neighboring countries and regional geopolitical players. Within the scope of issues originated over Iran's nuclear programs, Russia and the USA should unite their forces for positive results of the solution.
