2 thousand Armenian servicemen conducted peacekeeping missions in hot spots

YEREVAN, 29 MAY, ARMENPRESS. 2001 Armenian servicemen have conducted peacekeeping missions in the world. As "Armenpress" was informed by the Peacekeeping Brigade Commander Major General Arthur Simonyan, 657 soldiers conducted peacekeeping missions in Kosovo, 342 in Iraq, 1002 in Afghanistan and 32 in Lebanon. According to Arthur Simonyan, 1 serviceman is included as observer in UN Staff of Lebanon. Another Armenian peacekeeper is getting ready to conduct an observation mission in Mali.

May 29 is the International Day of Peacekeepers. The United Nations has decided to declare the May 29 as Peacekeeper Day in 2002. On the decree of the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia, the Peacemaker day is celebrated in Armenia from 2010. On the decree of the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia, from 1 September 2007, the Armenian Armed Forces peacekeeping battalion has been reorganized to peacekeeping brigade. The Armenian peacekeepers joined the NATO peacekeeping mission in February 2004. The Armenian peacemakers conducted missions at the American and Greece Armed Forces staff in Kosovo, from January 2005 until October 2008 as part of the Polish multinational division in Iraq and from January-February 2010, at the German Armed Forces staff in Afghanistan.

The 32-member platoon of peacekeepers, from 26 November 2014, has been conducting peacekeeping missions in Lebanon, at the UNIFIL mission staff, under the Italian command. The Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia has agreed to participate in the peacemaking mission to be organized in Mali.
