YEREVAN, DECEMBER 13, ARMENPRESS. The liberation of Aleppo can have some impact on the further developments of the Syrian conflict, however the impact will not be decisive, expert on Arabic studies Sargis Grigoryan told ARMENPRESS, speaking on the liberation of Aleppo by Syrian governmental forces.

“This entire process is leading not towards the resolution of the conflict, but rather we are stepping into the next phase of the conflict. The way that the liberation of Aleppo will contribute to us having a new reality, a Syrian leadership standing on better positions, which realizes its promises and liberates important provinces. If after this the Syrian government continues successful operations, then it will show President Bashar al Assad’s stable and strengthening positions”, Grigoryan said, emphasizing it will enable the Syrian President to have better positions in the next phases of the conflict.

Speaking about the security of Aleppo’s Armenian community, Grigoryan mentioned from this point of view the liberation process is also important. The militants, who posed a large threat and regularly shelled the Armenian districts are in fact eliminated: the Armenian community is freed from that danger.

“This has very important significance for us. I think the further process must be added to this. Now the danger is transferring to the West, the Idlib province, where the opposition potential is focused. If military operations in these areas continue and the governmental forces succeed, then the peaceful settlement process will benefit. The main dangerous terrorist structures are located in this area. It is close to Aleppo, Latakia. If the danger is eliminated there, definitely it will be an important step not only in terms of security of the Armenian community, but also in terms of the conflict settlement”, he said.

Various Syrian sources confirmed on December 12 the liberation of Aleppo by Syrian governmental forces.
