Belgium’s House of Representatives to introduce resolution on recognition of
Armenian Genocide for voting on July 7

YEREVAN, JUNE 26, ARMENPRESS. The draft law of the resolution on the Recognition of the Armenian Genocide will be introduced for voting on July 7. Peto Demirchyan - media relations officer for Europe’s Armenian National Committee – informed this in an interview with Armenpress.

He said that the party figures involved in the Parliament discussed the draft law of the resolution on the Recognition of the Armenian Genocide on June 24. The draft law was introduced by politician Peter De Roover. The document is in the negotiation stage and cries out for improvement. “The opposition forces are not pleased with the draft law and are criticizing the government for cooperation with Ankara as the resolution is softer than the Prime Minister’s statement,” Demirchyan explained.

The Prime Minister of Belgium Charles Michel recognized the Armenian Genocide on behalf of his government on June 18.  As Armenpress reports citing “De Morgen”, Charles Michel said that the tragic events, which took place in the period between 1915-1917 in the Ottoman Empire, should be considered genocide. The Prime Minister particularly stated in the government, “The relationship between history and the future is occasionally complicated. My position is well known, I think that the tragic events should be labeled as genocide, and that is also the position of the Belgian government.” American politician and civil rights lawyer Patrick Deval said, “It was genocide and it is vital that we firmly mention this fact as a state.” As MP Peter De Roover informed Armenpress, the Parliament of Belgium will discuss the draft resolution on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide at the plenary session of the parliament on June 18.
