UN "took note" of Pope’s comments on Armenian Genocide

YEREVAN, APRIL 14, ARMENPRESS: U.N. “took note” of the Pope Francis’ comments, who stated on April 12 that the mass killings of the Armenians in 1915-1916 were “the first genocide of the 20th century”. Armenpress reports, citing ITAR TASS that this position was announced to the reporters by the U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric on April 13. Ban Ki-moon “is fully aware of the sensitivities related to the characterization of what happened in 1915 and the April 24 commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the tragic events by Armenia and others around the world”.
Dujarric stated that the U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon considers the slaughter of Armenians by Ottoman Turks 100 years ago “atrocity crimes”. He said the Secretary-General calls the countries to continue the cooperation “with a view to establishing the facts about what happened 100 years ago”.
“The Secretary-General firmly believes that the commemoration of the tragic events of 1915 and continuing cooperation “with a view to establishing the facts about what happened should strengthen our collective determination to prevent similar atrocity crimes from ever happening in the future”, - stated the  U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric.
