Kragerø Mayor calls on Norwegian government to recognize the Armenian Genocide

Kragerø Mayor calls on Norwegian government to recognize the Armenian Genocide

YEREVAN, 31 MARCH, ARMENPRESS. Norway’s “Krageroblad Vestmar” newspaper has covered the Armenian Genocide. As “Armenpress” reports, the article particularly presents Mayor of Kragerø Kåre Preben Hegland’s call to Prime Minister of Norway Erna Sulberg and her partisans to recognize the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire. The article states that neither Sulberg’s administration nor Stoltenberg’s former administration has taken any action to recognize the Armenian Genocide, which took place between 1915 and 1922 and during which Turkish soldiers killed 1.5 million Armenians.

The author of the article also indicates the fact that Kragerø’s current and former mayors have visited Armenia and that Kragerø is closely linked to Armenian history since Bodil Katharine Bjorn, who helped the Armenians through different measures, was born in Kragerø.

The article also states that the Prime Minister of Norway had been invited to participate in the commemoration events to be held in Armenia’s capital Yerevan on April 24, 2015, but declined the invitation. In regard to that, the mayor of Kragerø has sent a letter to the Prime Minister of Norway, calling on him to participate as the Prime Minister in the ceremony commemorating the victims of the Armenian Genocide and declare that Norway recognizes the events as genocide.

It is also mentioned that Kragerø Municipality recognized the Armenian Genocide on October 26, 2006.
