YEREVAN, 18 DECEMBER, ARMENPRESS. Mayor of Yerevan Taron Margaryan has congratulated “ArmenPress” Armenian News Agency on its 96th anniversary. “It is safe to say that starting from the day of its establishment the Agency has played an important role in the development of our country’s politics and economy, as well as public life. Your policy on being operational, providing the society with objective and impartial information, raising several questions concerning the society and being consistent with giving answers to those questions has truly played its important role in the development of our newly independent country. I cordially wish that “ArmenPress” and the staff stay true to their calling and continue with the same devotion their pro-national efforts aimed at contributing to the development and advancement of our country and our capital city,” as stated in the mayor’s congratulatory message.

December 18 marks the day of the establishment of “ArmenPress”. The creation of Armenia’s telegraphic agency was marked in the record of the session of Armenia’s National Council on that exact day in 1918 and became a big event for the newly independent country. By the adoption of the first law on the establishment of the agency, all state and non-governmental organizations of the country expressed commitment to provide the agency with information. Moreover, it was prohibited to provide people or institutions with information before contacting with the agency. It was also prohibited to reproduce the information in subscribing newspapers within 48 hours after publication of the information.
