102 centenarians live in Armenia

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 1, ARMENPRESS. According to the National Statistical Service, 387 thousand out of 2 mln 995 (total population) are elderly, meaning 12,9 percent of the population are seniors, Anahit Gevorgyan – official of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs told a press conference.

“There are various reasons – decline of birth rate, migration, decline in employable youth, as a result – number of elderly is growing. If this pace continues, this will have economic consequences. In order to fix the situation, the economy must develop, jobs created, so the youth stay in Armenia, and the elderly are provided with dignified conditions”, she said.

6500 people above the age of 90 are currently living in Armenia, and 102 people above the age of 100 and two above the age of 115.

October 1 is International Day of Older Persons.
