At meeting with IAEA Director General, Armenian FM touches upon unnecessary speculations over operation of Metsamor NPP

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 4, ARMENPRESS. Foreign Minister of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan met today with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi, the ministry said in a news release.

FM Mirzoyan said Armenia, as a country operating a nuclear power plant, attaches importance to the development of the productive cooperation with the IAEA aimed at the peaceful, safe and secure use of nuclear energy.

The Armenian side highly appreciated the role of the IAEA technical cooperation programme and the Agency’s missions which are of fundamental importance for the long-term safe operation of the nuclear power plant. In this context he emphasized the impermissibility of threats voiced against the Armenian NPP, the unnecessary speculations connected with the operation of the plant.

Rafael Grossi said Armenia is IAEA’s reliable partner and highlighted the transparent activity of Armenia and the consistent addressing of the proposals of the IAEA missions.

The sides praised the fact that the Armenia-IAEA large agenda includes nuclear safety and energy, and also environment, healthcare, emergency situations and other sectors. In this context the Armenian FM highlighted the programs being implemented by the Agency’s financial and professional support in the aforementioned directions.

A number of issues relating to regional security were also touched upon during the meeting.
