Two bar association lawyers arrested on suspicion of stealing $7000 from JAILED CONVICTED
CRIMINAL

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 12, ARMENPRESS. Two members of the Bar Association of Armenia, known as the Chamber of Advocates, are suspected in stealing 7000 dollars from an imprisoned convicted criminal, the National Security Service (NSS) said.

The two lawyers were providing legal services to the convict in a correctional facility.
According to the NSS the two lawyers exploited their client’s trust and suggested them to give a 7000 dollar bribe which they would forward to a ranking official in the judiciary to parole the convict.

The convict eventually gave the money to the lawyers, who in turn stole it. 6800 dollars of the original sum was found in one of the lawyers’ home during a search, the NSS said.

The process of the bribe transaction was under NSS surveillance. A video posted by the NSS shows a woman, presumably a family member of the convict cooperating with authorities, giving the money to a man.

As part of a criminal case initiated at the NSS investigations department, the suspects were detained and questioned. During the questioning both suspects confessed, according to the NSS.

The NSS did not disclose the identities of the suspects and the convict.
