Trilateral cooperation can bring great results: Armenian PM hosts Greek President

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 5, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan received President of Greece Procopios Pavlopolos who arrived in Armenia on an official visit on November 5, the PM’s Office told Armenpress.

Welcoming the Greek President in the Armenian government, the PM expressed confidence that his visit to Armenia will contribute to developing and expanding the Armenian-Greek friendly ties. “Mr. President, I remember with pleasure our meeting in Beijing, China, at the Forum of Asian Civilizations where we had a comprehensive talk about the relations of our countries and our bilateral agenda in general. The relations between our states and peoples are at a very high level, and I hope we will be able to establish a more effective economic cooperation on this favorable background, as well as to raise our cooperation in other spheres to a new level and increase the results.

I also remember with pleasure my meeting with the new prime minister of Greece in September. We also discussed our relations and agreed on our upcoming actions. And we are waiting for our first Armenia-Greece-Cyprus trilateral summit which will take place in Yerevan in January. This is a very important event which will make our relations more favorable.

I would like to state that Armenia has a special attitude towards Greece, and our people greatly appreciate the fact that back in 1996 Greece officially recognized the Armenian Genocide. I want to note that in 2015 the Parliament of Armenia also officially recognized the genocide of Greeks and Assyrians. I think this fact creates a base for us to search for cooperation directions on global security matters because the recognition of genocides is not only a matter of historical recognition for us, but also an important effort aimed at the global security and prevention of genocides.

Let me once again welcome you in Armenia and express my satisfaction over your visit. I am confident this will give a new, a better dynamics to the relations of our countries”, the Armenian PM said.

In his turn the Greek President thanked the Armenian PM for the warm welcome and stated: “During our meeting in Beijing I promised you to visit Armenia within a year and I am very happy that I did my promise. Secondly, I want also to note that I am happy that Armenia is participating in the forum of ancient civilizations because this format is very important. I hope Armenia will play its role and will bring its contribution to the cooperation on strengthening civilizations within the framework of this format.

We especially welcome the efforts made by Armenia and its people aimed at the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide. This is a very important step, and we are providing our support to the matter. On the other hand, I am very happy that within the frames of this fight Armenia has also recognized the genocide of Greeks and Assyrians. At the same time, we also welcome and are happy over the recent adoption of the Armenian Genocide recognition resolution by the US House of Representatives, because this step is very important. We are not doing that for revenge, we are doing that in order to prevent the repetition of similar crimes.

I am very happy over and also welcome the trilateral cooperation between Armenia, Greece and Cyprus. Meetings should take place both at the foreign ministers and leaders levels. I am confident that the trilateral format cooperation cannot only bring benefits and can be effective for each country, but also for Armenia’s cooperation with the European Union”.

Thereafter, the Armenian PM and the Greek President touched upon the cooperation at the bilateral and multilateral formats, exchanged views on the Armenia-EU partnership. Pashinyan highlighted the ratification of the Armenia-EU Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by Greece as soon as possible.

The officials also exchanged views on regional issues. PM Pashinyan thanked Greece for the balanced position on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict and highly valued the bilateral cooperation in the military sector, in particular the training programs for Armenian officers in Greece.

“Mr. President, we have all grounds in terms of the development prospect of the relations of our countries”, the Armenian PM said.

“I am confident the format of our trilateral cooperation can bring great results. I wish success and prosperity to the Armenian people”, the Greek President said.
