Court of Appeals rejects jailed ex-SRC president’s motion to be set free

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 30, ARMENPRESS. A court of appeals has denied ex-State Revenue Committee President Gagik Khachatryan’s appeal to be set free from pre-trial detention.

Khachatryan’s attorney Yerem Sargsyan told reporters his client will remain jailed.

Khachatryan’s attorneys had filed a complaint seeking the court of appeals to overrule a lower court’s decision on placing the former official under arrest.

The former SRC president, who is also a former minister of finance, was arrested on August 27th. He is charged with embezzlement and official misconduct during his tenure as SRC president.

Amid the ongoing investigation, authorities said 800,000,000 drams in damages to the state have already been recovered.

Khachatryan’s nephew, who is also a former SRC official, is also charged and arrested.
