YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 14, ARMENPRESS. The introduction of the demerit point suspension system for traffic violations will lead to motorists driving more watchfully and safely, according to Tigran Keyan, head of the Driver’s Friend NGO.

“In addition, the bill doesn’t have the objective to collect money from drivers. It envisages that people should drive in conformity with the law,” he said.

He said that according to 2017 statistics 30% of all transportation vehicles registered made only 1 traffic violation in a year, while only 6% can theoretically face license revoking because they have more than 6 violations in a year.

The bill drafted by the government on introducing the new system was adopted by parliament at first hearing on September 11.

The demerit point suspension system will envisage 9 points for a year. A demerit point will be given for traffic violations. The number of issued demerit points can vary depending on the type of the offence. Those reaching the maximum allowed points in a year will have their driver’s license suspended.
